The first-season finale for Joss Whedon’s rookie sci-fi series Dollhouse is upon us at last. Will the episode, “Omega,” also be the series finale? Nobody but Fox knows at the moment, and the network isn’t talking.

During the latest adventures in mind-wiping tonight (May at 9:01pm ET, Firefly and Serenity star Alan Tudyk returns to reprise his role as infamous, slash-happy Alpha. To the show’s credit, it did a pretty good job of concealing his true identity from viewers at the beginning of last week’s “Briar Rose.” Agoraphobia? Yeah, right!

Alpha’s reign of terror continues as his obsession with Echo endangers Caroline’s survival. Meanwhile, Paul Ballard’s search for the Dollhouse comes to an end [I could have sworn he found it last Friday, putting an end to it then!], forcing him to make a life-changing decision.

And if that’s not enough drama, one Doll is permanently deactivated [let me guess Victor, who's sporting a new face now, thanks to his old chum Alpha], while another’s shocking past is revealed.

The promos that I’ve seen for the episode make it seem like Alpha and Echo have a whole Bonnie and Clyde thing going on, which I sincerely hope isn’t the case. Too many TV shows and movies have already been there and done that.

In addition to the usual familiar players, guest stars include Mark Sheppard (Battlestar Galactica) as Agent Tanaka, Angel Desai (Law & Order) as Sophie Alvarez, Marco Sanchez (Walker, Texas Ranger) as Blevins, and Ashley Johnson (Dirt) as Wendy.

Maybe Fox is sitting on the good, spoiler-ish ones until post-finale, kind of like the network (thankfully) did several times with The Sarah Connor Chronicles. At least Sierra and November strike some mean poses while Doll-ed up as bounty hunters, no doubt to catch Alpha.

First things first, however. This week’s majorly fantastic guest star is none other than Firefly alum Alan Tudyk. The actor plays integral character Stephen Kepler, an agoraphobic (abnormal fear of crowds, open areas, and/or public space) designer who put his magic touch on the Dollhouse.

As Paul Ballard’s investigation leads him to Kepler, the story of Sleeping Beauty somehow enables Echo to help a young girl named Susan (Hannah Leigh Dworkin, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) deal with her traumatic past, even as the tale provides insight into the Doll’s own fate.

Elsewhere, Adelle looks for answers to some of her problems in the notorious Attic, and Alpha gets busy coming out of the shadows to jumpstart whatever game it is he’s playing.

“Briar Rose” certainly sounds like a worthwhile penultimate episode if you’ve been digging the show. Sneak a peek at it in the preview photos after the jump.

Fox’s Dollhouse returns tonight after a week off with a new episode called “Haunted.” The drama also has a different lead-in now, outgoing Prison Break, which, unfortunately, probably won’t do it any favors in the ratings department, considering the jailbird series performed even worse than The Sarah Connor Chronicles did before it in the 8pm time slot.

The description for “Haunted” (love that title — hooks me every time) is short and sweet: Echo is forced to solve her own murder when Adelle gets her wrapped up in some nonsense involving a murdered wealthy friend named Margaret (Brenda Bakke, American Gothic).

The customary imprint is made freakier on this occasion because it includes the dead woman’s memories and personality, plus Echo’s engagement requires her to interact with the deceased’s still living husband (Ian Anthony Dale, Charmed). How weird is that?

While Echo is busy with the sordid business, lapsed FBI Agent Paul Ballard starts snooping into sleeper Doll Mellie’s background, and Topher hides his work programming Sierra for a covert engagement. So, the plot continues to thicken as we head toward the season/series finale in two more weeks.

That would be between recurring Dollhouse actress Liza Lapira (NCIS, Huff), who plays Ivy now and was Yuki Amado on the Showtime series, and guest star Valerie Cruz (Hidden Palms, Nip/Tuck), whom fans know as Dexter’s Sylvia Prado, but whom I love for her starring gig as Lieutenant Connie Murphy on the Sci Fi Channel’s aborted wizard drama The Dresden Files. Miss that one.

During “Spy in the House of Love,” the Dollhouse residents find themselves besieged by rumors of a traitor within the hideout. Echo and Sierra are promptly uploaded with new personas as spy hunters to reveal the spook, while Adelle attempts to hide a secret (is she the spy perhaps?) and FBI Agent Paul Ballard learns something unexpected from his nosy neighbor Mellie.

A few photos from the episode follow the jump. It looks like there’s going to be some fencing going on, which is always a hoot to watch. People jabbing at each other with long, bendy knives — what’s not to like?

The plot revolves around Echo, Sierra, and Victor waking up one day to suddenly find that their personalities and memories are what they used to be before all of the dangerous mind-wiping and whatnot. Ever determined, Echo then takes it upon herself to get her “friends” and all of the other Actives the heck out of there.

Can you blame her? That Dollhouse place is way too freaky, despite the super sleek decor and daze-like Zen atmosphere. Then there’s anal Laurence Dominic, who makes me wonder if he’s a closet serial killer or just always wanted to be one when he was a little boy.

Meanwhile, diligent FBI Agent Paul Ballard continues to ignore his Mulder-esque professional reputation and receives a reward of sorts when he gets closer to finally discovering the operative hideout. Yes, the Dollhouse is out there.

The notable guest star on “Needs” from where I’m sitting is former Prey and The Invisible Man cast member Vincent Ventresca, whose co-lead on the first science-fiction series was The Starter Wife’s very own Debra Messing. I always get happy when he shows up on my TV screen. Ugly Betty and Raising the Bar’s Teddy Sears is also on the guest roster.

When the Active is stationed at a college after a lethal viral outbreak, Echo begins to piece together parts of her past. And, apparently, Reed Diamond’s uptight Laurence Dominic will be sent undercover — or at least out in the field — with other Actives so he can get a little “engagement” action, too.

I imagine equally exciting for some comedy fans is the addition of guest star Patton Oswalt, who has previously contributed his talent to TV series like The King of Queens and feature films like Ratatouille. Battlestar Galactica actor Mark Sheppard also continues his quest to appear on every single show currently on television by reprising his role as Tanaka.

The undercover assignment of the week features Echo posing as yet another allegedly “perfect” woman (remember the outdoor adventure in the second episode “The Target,” which ended with her being hunted like a wild animal by a deranged dude wielding a big ol’ bow and arrow?), this time for the benefit of Oswalt’s Internet mogul. The poor guy is so lonely, he decides to pay the overpriced Dollhouse beaucoup bucks for the luxury of a mind-wiped pretend wife’s company. How sad is that?

Elsewhere, viewers will learn who attacked Sierra on a previous episode; Agent Ballard’s apparently love-struck and obviously nosy neighbor Mellie (Miracle Laurie) will be endangered; and Ballard himself will exchange blows with Echo. Hmmm… I wonder who’s gonna win that fight.

For whatever reason, the visual impairment will allow Echo to get on the inside of a weird cult that’s big on security in order to bring down the group’s leader and rescue a kidnapped woman. Operatives sure work hard for their money, or whatever the Dollhouse gives in return for repeated mind-wiping, unisex bathrooms, and dangerous missions.

The episode’s typically excellent guest stars — Joss Whedon is a real magnet, I reckon — include Aisha Hinds (True Blood, Invasion, The Shield), Brian Bloom (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Drive), Rebecca Field (October Road), Mark Totty (Joan of Arcadia), and David Alpay (The Tudors).

During her latest mission, Echo dons tight black leather pants and stiletto-heeled boots in order to assume the identity of an ace safe-cracker and participate in a dangerous art heist. Unfortunately, something gets stolen from her on the engagement, forcing Sierra to take on a familiar persona. Meanwhile, Agent Ballard gives Lubov an ultimatum, and icy Adelle reveals shocking information to annoying Topher (guess which characters rub me the wrong way.

Preview photos are ready for the third episode of Fox’s new series Dollhouse. “Stage Fright” will premiere on Friday, February 27, at 9pm EST (not the regular time of 9:01pm, according to the network).

To protect volatile pop star Rayna Russell (Jaime Lee Kirchner, Just Legal) from an obsessed fan, Echo goes undercover as her new backup singer. Meanwhile, Agent Ballard is led down a dangerously incorrect path in his investigation, and Russian mobster Lubov hides a secret.

Note that Enver Gjokaj’s current character Lubov was originally named Victor (pictured second from the left in the photo above) and described as Echo’s fellow operative and closest friend. The change must be for a good reason.
