Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Woody Allen, the movie takes place in Barcelona, Spain, where two young American women go on vacation together and end up falling for the same bohemian painter, played by No Country for Old Men Oscar winner Javier Bardem. The love triangle then becomes further complicated when his ex-wife enters the picture to reclaim her man.

I haven’t seen Vicky Cristina Barcelona yet, but the plot definitely sounds entertaining, hence all of the critical acclaim the film has received. Release details and stills from the movie follow the jump.

I’ve triple checked the last few days’ news from my usual television sources to no avail. So, in the absence of a last-minute reprieve, it appears we Lipstick Jungle fans have reached the end of the two-season road for the show.

Next (and apparently last) up is tonight’s finale “Chapter Twenty: La Vie En Pose,” which, judging from the plot description, doesn’t have anything final about it whatsoever. Does this mean fans will be left hanging with no closure for their favorite character(s)? Could be.

During the episode, Nico makes an appearance on NBC’s Today Show, which causes complications for her later; Wendy struggles to keep her daughter Maddie in check while Shane is away; and Victory does her best to make her parents and her new fiancé Joe get along.

Graham will play one of those self-help types who like to tell everybody else how to live a better life when their own isn’t so great. Her clientele is other women, but she’ll have to learn how to take the advice she dishes out herself when her boyfriend kicks her to the curb. That act alone tells us he’s an idiot.

In any case, sounds like a great setup for Graham, so now all we have to do is wait for the series to go through the customary production process.

I like Rita Rocks. True, I’ll like it even more when Lifetime stops airing it every single weeknight (once per week is more than enough). But, even with the overexposure, the one episode I’ve caught thus far is entertaining, engaging, and funny, and it seems a good fit for the family-sitcom crowd.

“Lies, Lies, Lies, Yeah-Ah” has two subplots: Rita’s (Nicole Sullivan) lie to her youngest daughter Shannon (Kelly Gould) when she misses an important moment during the child’s karate class, and Rita and her fellow band members finally allowing her oldest daughter Hallie’s (Natalie Dreyfuss) always-present boyfriend Kip (Raviv Ullman) to join their “old folks” band.

In the last case, Hallie doesn’t want her boyfriend to join her mom’s newly formed band because it would be embarrassing on the social front. However, Kip doesn’t care about the age thing; he likes to play drums and he knows they’re a good band.

When he shows up during a practice session in Rita’s garage one day and impresses the members — postal carrier Patty (Tisha Campbell-Martin) on keyboard and unemployed neighbor Owen (Ian Gomez) on upright bass, in addition to Rita on guitar — with his skills, their reluctance immediately vanishes and he’s in.

The main plot swings into motion when band practice runs overtime, causing Rita to show up at Shannon’s karate presentation just after her daughter breaks a board for the first time. Since her husband Jay (Richard Ruccolo) missed the moment on videotape, thanks to a non-charged battery, Rita lies that she saw her daughter’s achievement in order to prevent Shannon’s disappointment.

The truth comes out when Hallie lets it slip, and Rita overcompensates by purchasing a family dog that Shannon names Yoda. Yet, when Yoda goes missing, Hallie gets the opportunity to understand why lying to their children is sometimes unavoidable for parents. Shannon looks so upset when she realizes Yoda isn’t home, Hallie tells her the dog is at the groomer. Thankfully, Owen returns Yoda later when he finds the dog wandering around outside.

Although I missed the pilot episode on Monday that I assume sets the series up (there’s no encore until next Monday, so I’ll catch it then), the second episode makes it very clear who’s who and what the theme of the show is: working suburban mom Rita juggles her roles as a happily married wife and competent mother by forming a garage band as a creative outlet and stress buster.

That’s an excellent premise for Lifetime’s target audience, and it helps that the show seems well-written and capably acted by the effective and likable cast. It’s even funny, too, in that inoffensive, mild manner that characterizes many family-oriented sitcoms.

The series premieres next Monday, October 20, and stars The King of Queens alumna Nicole Sullivan as the title Rita Clements. Rita appears to have a great life, complete with a husband, a job, and two daughters. But, underneath the surface, she’s craving something more. Rita’s life needs some rejuvenation, which is why she decides to act upon her youthful dreams and start a garage band with a group of friends her age.

This premise has the potential to be lots of fun, especially with a cast that includes the talent of Richard Ruccolo (Joey, Two Guys and a Girl) as Rita’s husband Jay; Tisha Campbell-Martin (My Wife and Kids, Martin) as post office worker and fellow band member Patty; and Ian Gomez (Jake in Progress, The Drew Carey Show) as out-of-work neighbor and other fellow band member Owen.

The early post-premiere schedule for Rita Rocks is absolutely crazy, too. After the show debuts on October 20 at 8:30pm EST, it will air fresh episodes every weeknight at the same time, for a total of five new installments. Then, the following week, the series will settle into its regular 8:30pm, Tuesday-night time slot for the remainder of the first season’s thirteen episodes.

Apparently, the casting is part of a mutual lovefest between two of television’s most popular and talented female forces. Hayek says, “I have been a fan of Tina’s talent, both as an actress and a writer, since working with her years ago on ‘SNL.’ I am so excited to be part of such an intelligent, funny show, as well as working with the brilliant Alec Baldwin and the rest of the cast of ‘30 Rock.’”

And, 30 Rock creator, executive producer, and star Fey is thrilled, too, according to her comment, “Salma is smart, funny, and gorgeous. I think she will be a great strong presence opposite Jack Donaghy.”

Hayek joins previously announced big-name guest star Oprah Winfrey, who’s scheduled to appear on the November 6 episode of the series.

Now all we have to do is wait patiently until then to learn the resolution of the Season Two wedding cliffhanger. It was during the finale that almost-groom Bobby (Kyle Howard) finally began to examine his feelings for PJ, who, unfortunately, had already struck up a relationship with his brother. I can’t wait to see how all that works out.

Breast cancer survivor and Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate dropped by The Oprah Winfrey Show recently to discuss her highly publicized treatment, a double mastectomy to avoid chemotherapy, in response to learning she had the disease this summer.

Applegate’s discussion with the daytime talk-show host will air on Tuesday, September 30, to kick off National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The same show will feature other breast cancer survivors, as well as a visit by Susan G. Komen Foundation and 5K Race for the Cure founder Nancy Brinker.

Even if you don’t normally watch Oprah, this particular episode would be a good one to catch, at the very least to help raise your awareness of what a breast cancer diagnosis entails, courtesy of the ongoing campaign to make the affliction history through both prevention and effective treatment strategies.

Plus, you gotta love Applegate for being so open about her own very personal battle. The actress didn’t have to do that, and I’m just one of many, many people who appreciate that she did.
