Whoa! I didn’t see this coming way back whenever, but ABC Family is making sure everybody knows about it now.
When the network’s freshman teen-pregnancy hit The Secret Life of the American Teenager went head-to-head with The CW’s upper-crust sophomore teen hit Gossip Girl on Monday, January 19, the newcomer ran circles around the more established show. And, when I say circles, I mean rings more than twice as big on some measures.

Next up on The Secret Life of the American Teenager is tonight’s “Baked Nevada.”
First and foremost, in the biggest “Duh!” moment of 2009 television thus far, Amy and Ben discover that — shocker! — their underage wedding with fake ids on the previous episode is not legal. What high school do these two go to?!
Also, Grace’s adorable brother Tom (Luke Zimmerman) decides he wants to marry his new girlfriend, as viewers saw at the end of Amy and Ben’s ill-fated marriage ceremony.

When ABC Family’s hit drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager returns on January 5, central character Amy Juergens will still be 15, in high school, and very much pregnant. But, those are probably the only things in her already complicated life that will remain the same. As series star Shailene Woodley, who plays the teenager, revealed recently during an interview, numerous changes are on the way for the young mother-to-be.

As Grrl TV mentioned previously, ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager returns on January 5 with the midseason premiere “The Secret Wedding of the American Teenager,” one of twelve episodes remaining in the show’s freshman season.
Viewers can play catch-up before then, however, when the first eleven episodes are released on DVD this Tuesday, December 30.
Don’t be fooled by the packaging, though: while advertising claims the set is Season One, it’s actually just the initial eleven episodes that already aired on television last summer.

On Sunday, ABC Family’s three-night Samurai Girl event concluded. All in all, the miniseries was pretty good weekend TV, and it ended in such a way that I wouldn’t mind seeing a second run, similar to what the network did with Fallen.
Heck, I wouldn’t even mind a full-blown series since the characters were certainly entertaining, especially Otto (Kyle Labine), Cheryl (Saige Thompson), and — surprisingly — Severin (Steven Brand). The plot was intriguing enough, too. So, if we’re lucky, maybe ABC Family will adapt another one of Carrie Asai’s books.

Part Two of ABC Family’s Samurai Girl miniseries, “Book of the Heart,” aired tonight, and one of the most significant plot developments was the arrival of Stacy Keibler’s character Karen, who — surprise! — is so not what she initially seems.
True, we didn’t get to see all that much from her in the latest installment until the very end, but Stacey has some pretty “combative” scenes coming up in the finale, Sunday night’s “Book of the Shadow.” Let’s just say it will be showdown time — with very big and extremely sharp knives.
