Swingtown: 1.9 ‘Swingus Interruptus’ Review

by Chandra on August 3rd, 2008

Molly Parker and Miriam Shor/SwingtownOriginal Air Date: August 1, 2008

This episode is a hoot! Everybody’s hooking up — the adults, the kids, the teachers, the students, the married couples, the single people (aka “unicorns”), the swingers, the prudes! Too bad it took two months for it to air.

It’s about time for the Republicans to choose their presidential nominee at the Republican National Convention. How do we know this? Because it’s only mentioned about fifty times.

After a dinner party at the Deckers’ with Brad and Sylvia Davis, Bruce comes clean to his wife about kissing Melinda at her apartment the night of the blackout. Instead of getting upset, a calm Susan suggests she and her husband take shrink Brad up on his invitation to try out a hip sex nightspot downtown called the Pendulum Club.

Brad has an exclusive invitation to the popular attraction while he works on his forthcoming book about swinging married couples. Susan’s reasoning is that trying out places like the club might help her and Bruce prevent sex from controlling their marriage.

The Deckers decline Bruce’s initial invitation because they’ve recently closed their marriage, thanks to Tom’s “infidelity” with his stewardess co-worker Bobbi. Susan manages to convince them to tag along, however, to give her moral support.

Earlier, Trina bonds with Janet when she takes her muffins to apologize for the whole flap over Roger being at the Deckers’ pool party without his wife. The women bond — or as much as two people so different can — when Trina tells Janet she can explore life without changing who she is.

Later, Janet reciprocates when she admits she had Trina wrong — Trina seems like she wants to be the center of attention but she’s really an observer who treasures honesty. So, when Janet drops by to return Trina’s muffin pan while Susan and Trina are discussing the Pendulum Club, Janet agrees to tag along, too.

Brad and Sylvia come on to Susan super strong at the club — which Susan notes makes the Playboy Club look like the Girl Scouts — revealing how they both couldn’t stop obsessing over Susan and Bruce after they first met them. As a result of the flattery, the Millers retreat to their home with the Davises.

The Millers don’t realize their teenage daughter Laurie is at home getting cozy with her former summer school teacher, philosophy professor Doug Stephens, which leads to a very funny buildup to a very funny confrontation as Laurie and her “man” hide behind the bar while her parents smoke pot and get cozy with the Davises.

During all of this excitement, BJ takes Samantha to Rick’s house for a Pong party that turns into a spin the bottle party. When Rick ends up in a closet with Samantha, he ends up with a punch in the nose after he tells her BJ has a thing for taking in strays and then tries to kiss her. Double ouch!

It’s all good for BJ, though, because not only does he get to kiss Samantha for the first time later after he reassures her he doesn’t consider her a stray project, but they both get to watch, thoroughly confused, as Brad, Sylvia, and Doug flee from the Miller household, all pulling on clothes as they escape.

Inside, Bruce has had it, and he vows there’s going to be some changes going on soon to help him get back control of his family. Apparently, in his mind, their new upscale house and lifestyle are to blame for all of the turmoil, and the buck stops with the latest chain of events.

Oh, and Tom kisses Janet over at the Decker home when she reveals her real problem isn’t with the swinging life but rather that no man would ever find her attractive like all of the ladies seem to find her husband Roger. And, yes, the liplock helps Janet out big time, enough to give Roger permission to stay at the Deckers’ little post Pendulum Club party without her, although Roger declines.

Again, this episode is a hoot. Too little, too late, but a hoot all the same.
