New Sarah Michelle Gellar Series Ain’t No ‘Buffy’
And, why would it be? Sarah Michelle Gellar, better known to legions of TV viewers as Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Buffy Summers, has already been there and done that.
Variety reports the much-adored actress has a new half-hour TV gig underway in the form of an HBO series called The Wonderful Maladys. With a description that sounds more like a quirky, adult, family-focused program than a fandom-worthy exercise in massive creativity geared towards the young(er) set, Gellar’s upcoming New York-based series might take some convincing to get loyal followers of her signature show to sign up.
The ensemble offering from screenwriter Charles Randolph (The Interpreter) revolves around three adult siblings who are dysfunctional (what else?) after losing their parents when they were young. Gellar’s character, one of the three siblings, is said to have “a kind of zealous immaturity — like a drug addict with a to-do list.” Can Gellar pull that off? We’ll see. Maybe it will help that Randolph created the role specifically for her.
The Wonderful Maladys is on fast track at HBO, but it still has to go through the traditional process. If the pilot is successful and the network picks the series up for a full season, Gellar and Randolph will both serve as executive producers.
