‘Joan of Arcadia’ Returning to TV

by Chandra on June 23rd, 2008

Joan of ArcadiaAmber Tamblyn, Mary Steenburgen, Joe Mantegna, Jason Ritter, and Michael Welch fans take note. I’ve discovered that basic cable’s Sci Fi Channel will begin syndicating their intriguing dramedy Joan of Arcadia on Friday nights at 8pm EST, starting with the pilot episode on July 11.

Watching syndicated series on Sci Fi Channel is a bit tricky, however, because the network’s programmers like to play fast and loose with shows that don’t quickly earn substantial ratings. In other words, episodes often change time slots, if they don’t disappear all together. As a result of this unfortunate reality, I’ve taken to warning viewers to check Sci Fi Channel’s schedule regularly — as in daily — to make sure a scheduled syndicated show is still coming on when you expect it to.

That bad news aside, Joan of Aracdia is a fantasy/family series that originally aired on CBS. It stars Tamblyn, in her first major television role after she left her popular daytime soap-opera gig on General Hospital and before she gained a certain level of fame in the young-adult movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, along with Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera, Gossip Girl’s Blake Lively, and Gilmore Girls’ Alexis Bledel. The sequel to Pants premieres on August 6, in fact, with the entire original cast intact.

Those who haven’t seen Joan of Arcadia should know it’s a quirky, frequently touching, and highly entertaining show that was unfairly canceled after just two seasons. Despite general critical acclaim, it also caused some controversy because of the central theme.

Tamblyn plays the title character Joan Girardi, a typical teenage smart aleck and frequent conversation partner for God, a fellow smart aleck who just happens to take the form of many different people and most often shows up unexpectedly. The final season grew more intense when Prison Break’s Wentworth Miller came onboard to play an evil force in disguise.

Good times! Don’t miss out when Joan of Arcadia returns to the tube in a few weeks.
