So You Think You Can Dance 4: Joshua Wins!

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Joshua Wins!

As you probably know, last night was the fourth-season finale of the sensational Fox reality competition So You Think You Can Dance. Grrl TV extends a huge congratulations to Joshua Allen, my and America’s Favorite Dancer!
Joshua’s co-competitor Courtney Galiano placed fourth in terms of overall number of votes, Katee Shean third (plus she got a nice unexpected $50,000 bonus for being the top female dancer), and Stephen “Twitch” Boss second or runner-up.

And my choice for the Season Four winner on So You Think You Can Dance is the one and only Joshua Allen.
Joshua’s got the moves, the grooves, and the proper attitude, plus he’s the only dancer this season besides his original partner and fellow Top Four finalist Katee Shean to have never appeared in the bottom group facing elimination.
What I like most about Joshua, besides his obvious talent and dedication, is the fact that he looks like such a natural, despite his lack of extensive formal training. Series co-creator and head judge Nigel Lythgoe seems to thinks he has …read more

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Jessica Gives Up

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Jessica Gives Up

According to the news storming the Internet yesterday (which is why I’m only writing about it now — I like to wait until the other gazillion websites get these so-called “breaking news flashes” out of their rush-to-be-first system), So You Think You Can Dance contestant Jessica King has suffered an injury so major, she must leave the show right now, just days after earning a spot as a finalist in the coveted Top 10.
Observant viewers know otherwise, however. The real news is that Jessica has finally buckled under the constant criticism she received each week after every …read more

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Fourteen

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Fourteen

Following my complaints last week regarding how uniform the judges’ commentary has seemed this season, I had my killer line all prepared for this week’s write-up: “And joining the echo chamber at the judges’ table…”
Thankfully, the judges stole my thunder this week when they delivered useful critiques of each couple that showed they were paying close attention to every performance. The breath of fresh air made both of this week’s installments so much more enlightening and entertaining, and I can say without any sarcasm whatsoever that regular judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy were joined by choreography couple Tabitha …read more

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Sixteen Eliminations

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Sixteen Eliminations

So long, Chelsea Traille and Chris Jarosz!
June 26th brought the third round of eliminations on So You Think You Can Dance, which focused on the following Bottom Three couples:

Chelsea Traille and Thayne Jasperson because, once again, the judges complained mightily about their routine, a Quickstep number that was very enjoyable to watch and nowhere near as awful as the judges tried to make it seem
Comfort Fedoke and Chris Jarosz because ditto
Kourtni Lind and Matt Dorame because the competition is getting tough and somebody had to be the third couple

This was probably the first time there weren’t two obvious …read more

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Sixteen Overview

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Sixteen Overview

I learned two things on last night’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance. First, this season, we don’t have three independent judges assessing each performance but rather a tripartite unit that thinks in unison for the most part. This is why they all say basically the same things at the end of each and every performance. It gets old fast, doesn’t it? Worse, the judges also seem to have already picked their favorites, and their comments show they’re intent on having those dancers advance to the final stages of the competition.
Secondly, the judging panel …read more

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Eighteen Eliminations

So long, Susie Garcia and Marquis Cunningham!
The June 19th second round of eliminations on So You Think You Can Dance weren’t all that surprising. The bottom three couples were:

Chelsea Traille and Thayne Jasperson because the judges complained mightily about their failure to execute their routine effectively
Susie Garcia and Marquis Cunningham because they didn’t live up to their potential while dancing in a style both should be very adept with
Comfort Fedoke and Chris Jarosz because Mia Michaels and Nigel Lythgoe’s irrelevant comments about Chris’ whiteness made his obvious efforts seem much less worthy than they actually were

So You Think You Can Dance 3: Table Dance Flashback

So You Think You Can Dance 3: Table Dance Flashback

Let’s take a nice trip down memory lane.
Who can forget the eighth week of competition on the third season of So You Think You Can Dance, when eventual champion Sabra Johnson and her extremely talented partner Neil Haskell performed Mandy Moore’s Jazz routine to the tune of the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”?
The routine has since come to be called The Table Dance, and despite the unimaginative name, once you see the cool, calm, and thoroughly mind-blowing number as danced by Sabra and Neil, it’s hard to forget it.

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Eighteen Overview

The dancing on last night’s episode of So You Think You Can Dance was surprisingly non-entertaining. Although the judges — regulars Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, along with contemporary specialist Mia Michaels — faulted the competing dancers for most of the drudgery, I thought the lackluster choreography was the true culprit on several occasions. No matter which was responsible, thankfully there were still a couple of standout performances to make the two-hour episode worth the time spent watching it.

COUPLE #1Chelsea Traille & Thayne Jasperson

Chelsea and Thayne, spectacular last week during their Cha-Cha number, performed a dull …read more

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Twenty Eliminations

So You Think You Can Dance 4: Round of Twenty Eliminations

Well, the first round of eliminations came and went last night on So You Think You Can Dance, and it was a fairly predictable event in terms of which couples received the fewest votes from viewers and ended up in the Bottom Three.

BOTTOM COUPLE #1Rayven Armijo & Jamie Bayard

I completely agree this couple was one of the most disappointing pairs during the Round of Twenty. Although I initially believed their performance was subpar primarily because of ineffective choreography by hip-hop specialists Napoleon and Tabitha D’Umo, watching the routine several more times made me realize that Rayven and …read more
