‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ on DVD Tuesday

‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ on DVD Tuesday

Like film actresses Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Rebecca Hall, and/or Patricia Clarkson? If so, you’ll have the chance to spend some time with the talented women when their well-received romantic comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the latest Golden Globe winner for Best Comedy or Musical Movie, comes out on DVD this Tuesday, January 27.
Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Woody Allen, the movie takes place in Barcelona, Spain, where two young American women go on vacation together and end up falling for the same bohemian painter, played by No Country for Old Men Oscar winner Javier Bardem. The love triangle …read more

Out on DVD December 30: The Secret Life of the American Teenager

As Grrl TV mentioned previously, ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager returns on January 5 with the midseason premiere “The Secret Wedding of the American Teenager,” one of twelve episodes remaining in the show’s freshman season.
Viewers can play catch-up before then, however, when the first eleven episodes are released on DVD this Tuesday, December 30.
Don’t be fooled by the packaging, though: while advertising claims the set is Season One, it’s actually just the initial eleven episodes that already aired on television last summer.
For the list price of $39.99 — and, of course, the 3-disc set will be …read more

‘Swingtown’ Arrives on DVD Today

‘Swingtown’ Arrives on DVD Today

If you loved CBS’ hedonistic ’70s drama Swingtown from earlier this fall, good news: the show’s thirteen-episode first season comes out on DVD today.
Even better — if you’re still holding on to a sliver of hope that the series might return for a sophomore run — is the fact that the network hasn’t officially canceled it … yet. Word is that execs have a special love for the show, probably because the many baby boomers among them were coming into their own somewhere around that decade.
The DVD set looks good, too, despite studio Paramount’s ridiculous list price of $40.99 …read more

New on DVD Today: The Complete ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Here’s an oldie but goodie — the 1987–1990 CBS series Beauty and the Beast, which features action movie stars Linda Hamilton of Terminator and Ron Perlman of both Hellboy and the current FX series Sons of Anarchy. I’d buy it…

New on DVD: ‘Private Practice’ and Vintage Comedy

Quick Note: If you’re a Private Practice fan and were hoping the Season One DVDs would include the two-part backdoor pilot “The Other Side of This Life” that launched the series at the end of Grey’s Anatomy’s third season, you’re out of luck. For whatever reason, those episodes aren’t included, despite a strike-shortened freshman season of just nine puny installments. Studios can be so darn cheap!

New on DVD Today: Caroline, Tru, and That Girl

New on DVD Today: Caroline, Tru, and That Girl

Two sitcoms, one a classic and one more recent, as well as a nice spooky drama make up this week’s Grrl-y DVD releases. The comedies are Season Four of Marlo Thomas’ fun late 1960s show That Girl and Season One of the Lea Thompson series Caroline in the City, which ran on NBC from 1995 to 1999.
Rounding out the list of new boxed sets is a favorite of mine, Eliza Dushku’s short-lived Fox paranormal drama Tru Calling. The second “season” only had a puny six episodes, one of which never aired on the network. That helps explain …read more

New on DVD Today: Look to the Skies

This week’s new TV on DVD releases with women in mind have a celestial thing going on since both Birds of Prey and Saving Grace feature entities from way up on high.
I remember watching the first superhero-themed series when it aired on the defunct WB back in 2002 and 2003. It stars Jericho’s Ashley Scott, along with Criminal Minds’ Shemar Moore. Too bad the show was lacking creatively, but it’s still nice to see the complete 13-episode series offered in a single set. Studio Warner Home Video is definitely taking advantage of the Batman fever stoking entertainment …read more
