‘Army Wives’ Catherine Bell and Kim Delaney Visit ‘The View’
Yesterday was definitely Ladies Day on daytime talker The View. Not only did actress Glenn Close stop by to talk dogs, but after she left, talented and beautiful Army Wives stars Catherine Bell (JAG) and Kim Delaney (NYPD Blue) paid a visit, too. What a power show!
Bell and Delaney were on hand to discuss their current Lifetime series’ phenomenal success, of course. They also revealed why Season One regular Kim Allen’s character Amanda Holden died in the second-season premiere.
According to Delaney, Amanda was heading to college, and since the show is about army wives and not college students, Amanda’s academic status made her a more likely candidate for being written off the series given that the showrunners didn’t want to cheat viewers by having a bomber yet no casualties from the disastrous explosion.
Bell also answered a question I’ve always had, namely why she was cast as timid Denise after playing such a strong woman, attorney Lieutenant Colonel Sarah MacKenzie, on the legal military drama JAG. Based on their previous long-running roles — Bell played Sarah MacKenzie for nine seasons and Delaney played personally troubled but professionally accomplished Detective Diane Russell on NYPD Blue for eight — I’ve long felt Bell and Delaney were cast backwards. Until near the end of the first season, it seemed to me that Bell should have gotten the role of Claudia Joy and Delaney that of Denise.
Apparently, however, Bell wanted to portray a different kind of woman following JAG, although not a weak character. I guess Army Wives fans should be grateful Bell got the role she did then, since her input might have impacted the refreshing growth Denise has experienced as she’s become increasingly stronger and more independent.
