Army Wives: 2.8 ‘Loyalties’ Review

This episode of Army Wives has so much going on I can barely believe the showrunners managed to squeeze in all of the separate plotlines.

Chase and some of his Delta Force colleagues are arrested, leaving Pamela stunned and confused. It’s easy to feel for her, especially since the military police arrive at night when the Moran family is asleep and refuse to tell her what the charges are.

Pamela, an ex Boston cop, eventually learns from Carla — whose husband Steve was arrested, too, along with Jill’s — that their husbands are suspected of war profiteering, specifically stealing artifacts from Iraq, which Carla claims no one would miss, in order to make a profit. Yowza!

The harshest aspect of the entire situation is that even when Pamela manages to get a visit with Chase, thanks to Michael Holden’s intervention, even he won’t reveal what the heck is going on. Then he shows up however long later and discloses he was working undercover to take down Steve, a smuggler working out of Iraq and Afghanistan, along with Steve’s very dangerous colleagues.

Chase had to be arrested, too, so Steve’s cohorts wouldn’t catch on he was a rat. Be that as it may, I applaud Pamela for immediately informing her husband his explanation isn’t good enough for the living hell he put her through.

Roland has a chat with Denise about how much he regrets cheating on his wife because he noticed the look in her eyes when she was talking to Getti. The revelation causes Denise to back away from the doctor yet again … until the big kiss somewhere near the end of the episode before Denise pulls away once more and leaves the room entirely.

Then at Roland’s temporary job counseling high school students, the doctor is fired after he’s caught in seemingly inappropriate situations twice: talking with female student Jessica Foster alone behind a closed door and allegedly holding hands with her at a bar, which is actually just Roxy’s restaurant.

Both situations aren’t the least bit inappropriate. The student happens to be a lesbian seeking counseling on how to reconcile her sexuality with her military aspirations, and good on Roland for refusing to rat her out or let her rat herself out so he can get his job back. Eventually, Jessica goes against Roland’s wishes to do the honorable thing, and she confesses to his boss, Principal Gates.

Sally Pressman, Ana Ortiz/Army Wives 2.8Sandi (Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz) arrives at Betty’s Bar & Grill to waitress and immediately starts ogling Trevor, whom she calls “smokin’ hot” and “eye candy.” Meanwhile, Trevor is too busy pretending to not still be in pain from his injury, but he’s popping pills when he’s alone.

Thankfully, Sandi’s gig doesn’t last long. When she corners Trevor in the pantry and propositions him, Roxy overhears and fires her on the spot under the threat of a jar of mayonnaise upside her head (Go, Roxy!).

Sandi sues for wrongful termination soon afterwards, but Claudia Jo puts her long-ago legal training back into practice digging up some dirt on the woman and learns she’s a serial suer. The result is a roadside showdown, during which Roxy and Claudia Jo confront Sandi and turn the tables on her legal trickery.

Claudia Joy also learns she’s not pregnant during a medical appointment to check. Her doctor advises her it’s not too late and it’s also not unusual for parents in her situation to attempt to have another child after one dies. Claudia Joy responds she’s already raised her family, and the news she’s not pregnant is good news.

But she becomes upset when she tells her husband Michael and he reveals he would be thrilled to have another child now that Emmalin is growing up. The situation remains unresolved between the two because Claudia Joy gets upset during this discussion, as well.

All in all, “Loyalties” is a decent Army Wives episode, but it felt rushed in most scenes. There was too much going on in too many separate plots that I would have preferred to see unfold more slowly and in more detail in order to deliver more drama, clarity, and satisfaction.
