90210: Jason Priestley Says Yes, Luke Perry Says No

by Chandra on June 28th, 2008

Luke PerryThe boys of the original Fox series Beverly Hills 90210 have indicated different feelings about The CW’s upcoming 90210 “re-imagination” of the iconic teen drama.

While Jason Priestley, better known as Brandon Walsh to legions of fans, is reportedly interested in returning in a capacity behind the camera, Luke Perry, aka Dylan McKay, has publicly stated he “can’t re-imagine it currently.” Note the adverb “currently” at the end of that quote, however.

Perry made his remarks during an interview on Billy Bush’s radio show, where the actor clarified: “It’s just not something that I’ve thought about, to be honest. I don’t see it happening.”

I completely understand why a pop-culture figure wouldn’t want to be viewed as regressing in their career. On the other hand, I also understand why others consider a return to their former roles as an opportunity to give fans what they want, à la Jennie Garth and Tori Spelling, both of whom will play their former Beverly Hills 90210 alter egos — Kelly Taylor and Donna Martin, respectively — on the new spinoff. Different strokes for different folks.

As for Priestley, an article in the New York Daily News earlier this month confirmed he and The CW are discussing the possibility of him contributing to 90210 behind the scenes as a director of one or more episodes. The arrangement wouldn’t be unusual, as the actor has been successfully focusing on that aspect of his career for over a decade. In fact, he directed an impressive fifteen episodes of Beverly Hills 90210.
