‘90210’ Actress AnnaLynne McCord Likes Shannen Doherty

I imagine a recent article from People magazine’s website is a sign of things to come as the Fall TV season hype machine shifts into high gear. In the online world of unending gossip, People’s latest post on The CW’s hottest new series announces with flashing strobe lights: “90210’s Annalynn McCord on Shannen Doherty: ‘I Really Like Her!’”
Now I ask, does anyone think that Shannen Doherty cares whether or not 21-year-old 90210 co-star AnnaLynne McCord, who plays rich brat Naomi, likes her? Nevermind that at the time AnnaLynne made her comment, she hadn’t even met Shannen yet. And certainly nevermind that People grossly misspells AnnaLynne’s name in the headline (for the record, it’s “AnnaLynne,” not “Annalynn”).
What’s important is that Shannen has AnnaLynne’s stamp of approval, although the newb confesses she’s never watched an episode of the Fox series that made Shannen a TV star, either. I guess I was wrong when I assumed their bosses would require all of the twentysomething cast members to sit through at least an hour or two of Beverly Hills, 90210 by this point.
In any case, regarding the similarity between Jennie Garth’s Kelly Taylor (a role Garth will reprise on the CW show) and Naomi, McCord dishes more insight, such as her opinion that showrunners “kind of made [her] character a little like the girl who thinks she’s Kelly Taylor — spoiled little rich girl.” And to top off the nuggets of wisdom, AnnaLynne offers the revelation that 90210 is “a new spin on an old thing,” albeit an old thing she’s never seen, so how would she really know?
No, the significant piece of information in People’s fluff piece is the fact that Thursday, August 7, was Shannen’s first day on the set of the spinoff. Shame on the writers or editors or whoever for not going with a better title to highlight that truly noteworthy news.
