HawthoRNe: ‘Healing Time’ Preview

Jada Pinkett Smith, Vanessa Lengies/HawthoRNe 1.02

It’s another day and another round of crises on “Healing Time,” the second episode of TNT’s new Jada Pinkett Smith medical drama HawthoRNe.

Some — okay, many — television writers are bashing the show for various reasons, the most common being that it’s not a darkly humorous, hip-aspiring clone of Showtime’s new Edie Falco medical comedy Nurse Jackie.

But why should it have to be? After viewing tonight’s (June 23) episode in advance, I’m enjoying the series more than I did during the pilot.

Jillian Armenante, Jada Pinkett Smith/HawthoRNe 1.02

“Healing Time” opens with another potentially violent encounter with a patient, and Christina delivers an impressive blow that, unfortunately, lands on the wrong face.

Cloris Leachman/HawthoRNe 1.02

Popular actress Cloris Leachman (Dancing with the Stars) also drops by to play an irritable elderly patient who’s so mean, she makes poor Kelly (Vanessa Lengies) more of a nervous wreck than she is around the doctor whose English she can’t understand.

Suleka Mathew, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jamal-Malcolm Warner/HawthoRNe 1.02

Then there’s Cosby Show alum Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who plays a patient with a brain aneurysm and resulting dementia that causes him to mistake Christina for his wife and then rely on her guidance for important medical decisions.

Michael Vartan, Jada Pinkett Smith/HawthoRNe 1.02

Of course, the charade that sympathetic Christina reluctantly participates in with the patient doesn’t please Dr. Thomas Wakefield (Michael Vartan) at all, especially when the patient actually listens to Christina’s advice over his.

Aisha Hinds/HawthoRNe 1.02

Homeless Isabel (Aisha Hinds) is back on hand, as well, and her complicated situation continues to change by the hour.

David Julian Hirsh, Christina Moore/HawthoRNe 1.02

And, finally, poor conflicted, well-intentioned male nurse Ray Stein (David Julian Hirsh) ends up in the worst place at the worst time (again), and nothing he does to improve the situation works. Some people are just cursed.

Check out a sneak peek below featuring guest star Warner and tune in to HawthoRNe Tuesdays at 9pm ET on TNT.
