Rumor: ‘Gossip Girl’ Spinoff Dead Again For Good

Gossip GirlNikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily reports today, May 7, that sources have informed her the proposed Gossip Girl spinoff — originally tentatively titled Lily and then Valley Girls — is dead at The CW again.

Lily was supposed to focus on a young Lily van der Woodsen, played in her later years by Kelly Rutherford on Gossip Girl and by Brittany Snow on the prospective upcoming spinoff. The CW was slated to launch the second show during next Monday’s (May 11) episode of Gossip Girl called “Valley Girls,” which would double as Lily’s back-door pilot.

However, Finke — never one to mince words — reports GG fans can “put a fork in it. It’s done.” Admitting her own surprise, she goes on to clarify that “the show went from hot, to lukewarm, to ‘fading but wouldn’t count out’, to now dead, according to my insiders.”

If this development is actually true — The CW hasn’t made any such announcement … yet — Finke won’t be the only person surprised. I imagine tons of teen girls all around the world will suffer from shock and disbelief that Gossip Girl 2 didn’t happen.

On the bright(er) side, Finke also reports that the Melrose Place reboot “is a lock,” so maybe that will help some CW viewers recover from the GG disappointment a bit faster.

Gossip Girl airs Mondays on The CW at 8pm EST.
