Sigourney Weaver Stars in ‘Prayers for Bobby’
Most of us know Sigourney Weaver as invincible, no-nonsense alien butt-kicker Ripley, but the actress’ newest project couldn’t be more different in tone. This weekend, she headlines Lifetime’s latest original made-for-TV movie, Prayers for Bobby, a real tearjerker with a real message based on a real story that originally took place in the 1970s.
Weaver plays religious mother and housewife Mary Griffith, who learns some important lessons about herself and life as she struggles first to deal with her son Bobby’s homosexuality and then his suicide when her attempts to “cure” him don’t work. Following the second tragic event, Mary undergoes a transformation she never though possible earlier in her life.
In addition to Weaver — who’s always magnificent no matter what she’s in — the excellent cast of Prayers for Bobby includes Mean Creek’s Ryan Kelley as the title Bobby, Henry Czerny (The Tudors) as Mary’s husband Bob, and openly gay Dan Butler of Frasier as Reverend Whitsell, the person who helps Mary in the aftermath of her son’s death.
Prayers for Bobby premiered on Lifetime yesterday, but the network will air an encore tonight at 8pm EST, followed by “Strangers in a Strange Land,” the second episode of the recently ended second season of Army Wives.
