‘Private Practice’ Follows ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Starting Tonight

Kate Walsh/Private PracticeFinally, the match-up fans have been waiting for since the Addison-centric Grey’s Anatomy spinoff Private Practice was first announced.

Beginning tonight at 10:01pm EST, the younger show will begin airing immediately after its predecessor. I’m eager to see if the move leads to improved ratings for one or both series.

Here’s what’s coming up on the show’s today, January 8, during their respective first new episodes of 2009, complete with sneak peeks:

Grey’s Anatomy
Wish You Were Here

Pulp Fiction’s Eric Stolz plays death-row inmate and Seattle Grace patient William, whose presence after he’s stabbed in the back with a shiv ignites controversy among several doctors, including couple Derek and Meredith. Stolz has directed a couple of episodes of the series — “Brave New World” and “These Ties That Bind” — this season, too, which should make seeing him on the opposite side of the camera even more interesting.

Elsewhere, Bailey collaborates with new pediatric surgeon Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw of The Practice) to save a patient she knows well. Sneak peek featuring Stolz after the jump. [9pm, ABC]

Private Practice
Contamination

A patient comes down with the measles, forcing a quarantine at Oceanside Wellness; Naomi tries to persuade Addison to collaborate with her Pacific Wellcare rival Wyatt (Jay Harrington); Violet and Pete contemplate changing the sexual nature of their relationship; and Dell pursues sole custody of his daughter. Amy Brenneman’s former Judging Amy costar Jillian Armenante guest stars. [10:01pm, ABC]
