Oscar Winner Mira Sorvino in ‘The Last Templar’ Tonight
NBC has something nice up its sleeve tonight for TV viewers seeking a little medieval entertainment mixed with familiar faces. Who wouldn’t want some of that?
Mira Sorvino, a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award winner for Mighty Aphrodite, will headline the network’s four-hour, two-part miniseries The Last Templar when it takes off tonight, January 25, at 9pm EST.
Sorvino plays lead character Tess Chaykin in the drama, which is based on the best-selling debut novel of the same name by author Raymond Khoury. Equal parts mystery, history, and action-adventure, the plot revolves around Tess, a Manhattan-based archaeologist, and her reluctant partner, FBI Agent Sean Daley (The Unit and Felicity’s Scott Foley), as they attempt to unravel the perplexing secrets of the medieval Knights Templar.
Despite the obviously strong female lead already in place, this project also has an oddly strong Jennifer Garner connection. Not only does her ex-husband Foley star, but her former Alias daddy, Victor Garber (Eli Stone), does, as well. He plays Vatican envoy Monsignor De Angelis, and the miniseries’ other major star is legendary Omar Sharif (Doctor Zhivago, Lawrence of Arabia), who portrays a Greek savant named Konstantine.
With a plot that repeatedly fluctuates between modern-day New York and the 13th and 14th centuries, I can totally see why this tale requires four hours to unfold. I’m also predicting fans of movies like the Indiana Jones series and TNT’s The Librarian will find it especially appealing. However, if you watch Part One tonight, keep in mind that the second and concluding part airs Monday at 9pm EST.
Two quickie sneak peeks at the miniseries follow below, and I must say it looks pretty good from where I sit. Think I might check it out since there’s no new Desperate Housewives or Cold Case coming up.
