Ghost Whisperer: ‘Heart & Soul’ Preview
Enjoying the new direction of Ghost Whisperer with Dead Jim? Yeah — me neither, and it looks like the poor paramedic is going to stay all ghosty and everything, too.
On the upcoming episode of the series, “Heart & Soul” — also known as the third installment of the Dumb Dead Jim Era in my mind — Melinda will begin pursuing a relationship with the guy whose body Jim jumped into at the end of the last episode. But, remember, when he regained consciousness, Dead Dude/Jim didn’t know who Melinda was.
Well, it turns out he — though I’m not sure if that means Jim or the dead dude — has amnesia, and show runners would have us believe this is the next stage of Melinda and Jim falling in love all over again. Apparently, it doesn’t matter that the couple was already in love and doing just fine… until said show runners killed the Jim character, that is.
Whatever. A trailer for the episode follows the jump. One barely bright spot in this mess is that Sam Lucas, the dead dude now inhabited by Jim, is played by the same actor, Kenneth Mitchell, who played Skeet Ulrich’s brother on Jericho.
Ghost Whisperer airs Fridays on CBS at 8pm EST.

Well, OK, I just watched this episode–I realize this program is not exactly high art and is not meant to be taken seriously, but I expect the writers to adhere to some sort of real-life logic when they create plots. So having Dead Jim leap into the body of a car-crash victim seems a bit of a stretch. I mean, if the accident damaged Sam’s body enough for Sam to “give up the ghost,” so to speak, then WHY would this same body sustain life merely because Dead Jim’s spirit leapt into Sam’s spirit void? If the damaged body couldn’t support Sam, how does it support Dead Jim?? Also, how convenient that Dead Jim picked a totally unattached newly-dead guy for his impromptu reincarnation. What if Sam was a married dad of 4??? Would Melinda be forced to break up a family? Of course, I must admit, I am glad Jim’s still onthe show. He’s a doll. I saw no preview for episode 9, so I’m guessing next Friday will be Ghost Whisper-less?
You make some excellent points, Maxwill, especially with regards to Sam being too-perfectly unattached, not to mention being so willing to not remember his old life.
I was surprised, though, at how tolerable I found this particular episode. It was great to see both David Conrad and Camryn Manheim figuring more prominently in a plot.
As for next week, there will be an episode of Ghost Whisperer, but it’s a repeat of the Bloody Mary installment “Don’t Try This At Home” from the beginning of the third season. The next new episode is “Pieces of You” on December 5.
After watching this show for 4 seasons, I am amazed at how I often accept such silly premises. I never watch network tv, and only started watching this show because they filmed the pilot right here in the town where I live. So I guess my expectations aren’t too high, and yes, I agree with you–I enjoyed the episode, despite all its silly inconsistencies. I guess when you eat a Twinkie, you aren’t expecting flavorful nuances.
