In Plain Sight: 1.9 ‘Good Cop, Dead Cop’ Review

Mary McCormack/In Plain Sight 1.9Original Air Date: July 27, 2008

I really enjoyed this episode of In Plain Sight, mostly because of guest star Jason Wiles — the actor behind Bosco on Third Watch — who is always 110 percent entertaining to watch.

The opening scene, which could have come straight from Wiles’ old series, takes place sixteen months ago in Chicago. After Wiles’ cop character Robert Patrone chases a suspect and attempts to plant evidence on him, he’s shot in the back by his partner before he returns fire and kills his colleague.

We then learn Robert has ratted out his fellow officers due to pressure from the FBI, which has a solid police corruption case in the works, and requires WITSEC protection now that he’s branded a cop killer.

Three months later, enter Mary, who has recently relocated to Albuquerque, where she has just bought a three-bedroom house, and is trying to stay away from her family while improving herself, first by completing a juice fast. She’s initially repulsed by Robert, probably because they’re both so much alike.

But eventually his brash charm gets to her, and they end up having a one-night stand. Predictably, her lack of self-control causes complications in the present when a former Chicago and current New Mexico cop is killed on the job and Robert becomes the immediate prime suspect.

Nichole Hiltz/In Plain Sight 1.9Did the ex police officer do it? Of course not. The man is now a contractor, and he’s so tired of living under a fake identity he voluntarily leaves WITSEC at the end of the episode and reveals he’s not even going to try to hide; he’ll continue living right there in New Mexico, and I pray to the TV gods this means there’s a possibility of Wiles becoming a series regular. He’s been one of my all-time favorite TV actors since his lean, mean, pit bull-runt Bosco days.

It turns out the dead cop’s wife killed him because he was gay, despite their twelve years of marriage and two children together. Her mistake was using his service bullets in the gun she shot him with because bullets are specially marked to identify which cop they belong to.

The pretty interesting subplots revolve around Mary’s boyfriend Raphael having slept with his physical therapist when he and Mary temporarily split, and Brandi getting an amorous call from her never-seen boyfriend Cooper that encourages her to retrieve that suitcase of drugs from where she threw it by the river.

However, more shocking than Cooper’s news of a huge deal about to go down is the fact that the suitcase remains where Brandi threw it. There must not be many people living in their neck of New Mexico.
